DH SHOPPING WITH MARGUERITE RODGERS

Versatility, thy name is Marguerite Rodgers—“Meg” to those who know her. Just one shuffle through her packed portfolio tells you she’s a broad thinker, and intuitive. A Federal town house. A Dutch Colonial home in the country. A chic Chinese restaurant. Since 1980, the affable Rodgers and her team—ensconced in a 25,000-square-foot former warehouse in Philadelphia, surrounded by artisans who often collaborate on the firm’s myriad projects—have turned out impeccably tailored spaces, all with a warm, unruffled, cohesive quality. So what catches the multitasking Rodgers’ eye when it comes to individual pieces at Dering Hall? We find out.

BLACK LACQUER NIGHT STAND, BY MARJORIE SHUSHAN COLLECTION
“I would use this as a bedside table or an end table. The finish is sophisticated and luxurious. While it has an old-world charm, it would live comfortably in a more modern setting with a simple change of hardware. I love the proportions and the combination of the drawers and the open shelf.”

OLIN NIGHTSTAND, BY MOISES ESQUENAZI & ASSOCIATES
“I love how this table functions. It is so simple that it would live well with many styles and locales. The lip on the top, the pullout shelf, and the lower drawer and shelf provide a multi-functioning piece. The choice of color allows this to transform to suit any home.”

OWL LIGHT, BY COLLIER WEBB
“This lamp is fun, while at the same time sophisticated. The detail of the owl’s body, its posture and its expression give it a great, animated character. I would use this in a sophisticated town or country home, especially a study or a library.”

RANCHO CONSOLE, BY DONNA LIVINGSTON DESIGN
“The veneer pattern appears to be end-grain wood, which gives this a very organic, natural appearance. This console is a perfect combination of materials including wood, limestone, bronze, and lacquer. I would use this console in modern and transitional interiors and in country, urban, and beach homes.”

DAYBED, BY BASSAM/FELLOWS
“I see this in a theatre, or positioned toward a peaceful vista—a cityscape, a mountain, woods, a lake, or an ocean. It’s a classic piece that would be comfortable in many settings.”

FIORE TABLE, BY DOWNTOWN
“I love the sensuous curves and forms of this table. The use of a singular wood gives it a very sculptural look. This is a handsome table that would be at home in modern and classically styled interiors. I would use this piece as a library table, a desk, a hall table or a small dining table.”

SHELL SCONCE, BY DAVID IATESTA

“I love the natural form of this sconce. This would be great in a beach home, a country estate, or a sophisticated townhome. It would add a wonderful texture and character to the interior.”

JBS KALMAR ZYLINDERZUG CHANDELIER, BY JONATHAN BROWNING STUDIOS
“I absolutely love this fixture! I would use it in a restaurant, a home, or office. Install it over a bed, a desk, a library table, or any table where you might want to pull the light down closer to the surface. The style is well-suited to almost any setting.”

THE PARK AVENUE BOOKCASE, BY SOANE BRITAIN
“The proportions of this bookcase are near-perfect. I would love to see a pair of these in a family room or a great room, to house books and objects. The pull-out shelf is a great feature, allowing one to look through a book or scrapbook or to use the bookcase as a desk.”

THE CRILLON CHAIR, BY SOANE BRITAIN
“I love its style, the scale, and proportions. I would use a pair as guest chairs in an executive office, a reception foyer, or a library.”

REED SCONCE, BY THE WISEMAN GROUP
“I like the simple, clean lines of this swing-arm lamp. I can see a pair of these as bedside lamps or in a library. I love that they are available in various extensions.”

COLETTE SCONCE, BY MAGNI HOME COLLECTION
“This is a great, sculptural, cast-bronze wall sconce. I think it’s elegant and I’d love it in a well-proportioned powder room or foyer.”

THE JEFFERSON SIDE TABLE, BY VICTORIA HAGAN
“I find this to be a very pretty piece. I like the delicate frame around the drawers and the contrast of dark and light. Also in contrast, the base gives it a grounded and chunky presence. I would love a pair in a modern city home.”

HOLLYHOCK THREE PANEL MIRROR, BY SUZANNE RHEINSTEIN HOLLYHOCK
“I love an antiqued, hand-rolled mirror to add a luxurious element to any room. The panels reference early historic pieces, when larger sizes of mirror could not be manufactured. The choice of leaf for the frame allows you to customize it to your setting. I would add this in a bar, a foyer, or a hall.”

STILLTON BENCH, BY JOHN POMP STUDIOS
“Such a handsome piece. It could also serve as a table. I love the combination of blackened steel, leather, and carved wood. This bench would be at home in almost any interior style and type, including hospitality or office. Love it!”

THE SAMUEL COCKTAIL TABLE, BY STUDIO VAN DEN AKKER
“Nice combination of materials and contrast between the thick wood top and thin planes of steel. The joinery detail where the steel is let into the wood and wraps around the thickness of the top allows for a simple, sophisticated design that works in many settings.”

MATTHIESSEN ROUND TABLE, BY RICHARD WRIGHTMAN DESIGN, LTD.
“I love the campaign style of this table, the simplicity of the base, and the detail of the joints. Place this as a center hall table with flowers, or in a bay window loaded with books.”
